CAITLIN SHEARER: pepperminte

.Since you started posting your works on deviantART, your style has evolved and changed a lot, especially in representing faces. Was it only an increase of ability in drawing or did it go hand in hand with a change in your tastes and style?
i think change just happened as a natural and gradual thing. ive been on deviantart for like four years now, and i was only in mid highschool wehn i started, so i was dabbling in drawing really. now its actually something very serious for me and i guess my style has emerged. i think it will keep slowly being built upon though, as the years go by. the more you practice, the better you get.

You have portrayed, among others, Paul Banks and Patrick Wolf, and you quote Interpol very often. Are you inspired by music for your pictures?
im more inspired by social situations that music , but i listen to alot of music when i work, so it must be a subconcious inspiration.
i get inspired more by seeing bands live. i painted the paul banks portrait a day after i saw interpol in sydney and the same with mr wolf.

How was the "Bleeding Knees Club" idea born?
one day i made a painting of a little row of legs. and i put some red on the knees, and then left the house to go for a walk while the paint was still wet.
i came back and the red had leaked all down the legs, and it looked like blood! so that was the very beginning and i guess it was fate. now a friend of mine owns that painting and its just super to see the different reactions to it. some people are a bit horrified, which i dont understand, but oh well!

In almost every one of your works you focus a lot on sitters' necks, eyebrows and legs. Why?
i get obsessed with things very easily. id say im most obsessed with eyebrows. and legs are just beautiful. and youre lucky to have a swan neck if youve got good genes.
i guess i fuss over alot of aspects of the body in my real life, so it just comes through. theres alot of importance embedded in certain imagery, just because of past experience and memory.
i mean, it was never cool in highschool to have big eyebrows, but when youre half italian you cant really help it. so now im embracing it and treasuring it because really, its okay.

With your work "Women" it's obvious that you have a flair for realistic painting. Why have you chosen to portrait these eccentric and original girls?
oh, that one is really old! haha. i think i just grabbed a bunch of fashion magazines and drew some faces.

Why did you stop taking photos?
i didnt. i carry an old broken ricoh around with me all the tim. taking photos is another quicker way to make art, and i really love that.

Tell me about the "Ersatz Accquaintances" project.
well, in my last year of highschool i had to work on a project that sustained me for the whole year, so it turned into a book of illustrations, a see through dress and a glittered dollhouse.
the project was about imaginary friends and being able to invent and create your own little people with your imagination. i made all these paper dolls and it was quite funny because it took nine months, just like the gestation period for a real baby. it was alot of hard work, and i spent most of my senior year sitting in the art block drawing pictures. i hated school, so it was an escape for me. but at the same time, it was good to focus on something that i had a passion for when all the terrors of the HSC were looming.

Your works were exhibited in Sydney. How was it? Was it the first time? How does it feel to have your works exposed to so many people?
yes, the ersatz project was the one exhibited! its was done through this initiative called art express, which showcases the very best HSC art from NSW. at the time it was very hard to comprehend, but i am so super pleased to have been given that excellent opportunity. ive also had a few works shown at the regional gallery in gosford, but this summer im going to take some steps to contact some more galleries. fingers crossed!

Do you think you're going to make a career out of your passion?
oh yes, of course! ive recently opened up an etsy store, so i guess i already am. i never want to go to work in a black pinstripe suit and be stuck in a cubicle, typing away.
im a bit of an idealistic romantic kid, but if i could paint in my bedroom all day every day, then i would be happiest.

THE SHE SET: djing conglomerate

Appena tornate da Benicàssim (dove si è svolta la quattordicesima edizione del FIB - Festival Internacional de Benicàssim), le She Set - precisamente Vanessa - hanno gentilmente risposto alle nostre domande.

.The She Set. Why?
Why not? we all enjoy playing records and listening to music, so we decided to start Dj, and know we have our own club night called The Sect, which happens on the first Thursday of the month.

.The Horrors girlfriends, sisters and so on. What can you tell us about them?
They are great guys, who kn ow a lot bout music. At the moment they are recording their next album, which is going to be amazing

Cherry

.If you could lick the boots of an international group, which would it be?
Leohnard Cohen a genius

.What have you got in your bag right now?
Just got back from Benicassim so I have loads of crap..sunlotion, a fan, a wallet, mirror, lipstic, hairbrush, a book (Ernest Hemingway the old man and the sea), I pod and loads of rubish as I hate littering the floor.

.What do you think about the 'indie-pendent' scene nowadays? Do you feel a part of it?
Well dont think that the term indie has the same meaning it had in the 80's and in the early 90's as there is not really ny independent lables anymore...I do consider myself indie by heart. Indie bands of the moment could be bands like Hatcham Social and Rulling class which by the way they are both playing for us in September at the Sect.

.The best song ever?
I can answer that as it all depends of what mood I am in.

.Have you ever dreamt to live in a movie? Which one?
Female trouble

.How was your first kiss?
to drunk to remember haha

.Name an italian city that you would like to play in. And, so, let's come in Italy :)
one of my favorit films off all time is Roma by Fellini, so would have to choose your capital. But Italy is such an amazing country with so much history. I am obssesd with Roman History.

I think people know of us..but not sure if we are that popular ha ha

Monster Bobby: a male ape copulating with a female cyborg

.Hi Bob. Why Bob?
i've been asking myself the same question for years. still can't figure it out though.

.Have you ever serenade a girl?
No but I did once make a girl fall asleep by singing to her.

.Would you play on Venus?
Hell, if someone's willing to pay my travel costs and sort me out with a place to stay the night then i'll play anywhere. venus, you say? sure, why not? how's the parking?

.Coffee or tea?
tea. tea is the only drink with magical powers, but only when made by english builders.

.Tell us about 'I heard you moved away'.
Tell you what about I heard you moved away? you want to know what it's about? Well, it's about three minutes long. but the whole process of writing and recording it took only about half as long. the original version contained two samples, a sample from the drum loop of 'jesus wants yo ass' by bad bill graham's incredibly bonkers bongo band, and a sample from a traveling salesman in the west midlands. the version on the record doesn't contain those samples though because we couldn't get clearance, we all had caught clearance before, as children, and you can never get it again once you've had it. so we had to make do with a bit of tidy. the version on the record does, however, contain the delightful trumpeteering of mr dexter batson, the mellifluous fluting of mr peter westlake, and some traditional corinthian yodelling by my friend antonia (also known as komon - see www.myspace.com/komonkomon). Funnily enough, shortly before the record came out, i actually moved away myself. only i wasn't around to hear about it.

.The Pipettes. Tell us about them - and their dotted outfit.
The pipettes' polka dot signature was actually invented by Julia's mum. julia's not in the band anymore, and neither is her mother, but then line-up changes for the pipettes are like hair cut changes for most bands. curiously enough, haircut changes for the pipettes are beoming increasingly rare. gwenno's hair is now 6 foot long. give her an electric shock and she doubles in height. funnily enough in the week our album was released in the UK, the budget clothing store, Primark, released a £10 polka dot dress which sold more in it's first week of sale than any dress ever before. in comparison, our album didn't fair so well, reaching a mere no. 42 in the hit parade.

.Who is your best friend?
anyone with a fiver and a cigarette going spare.

.Your first love?
Would, according to the theories of child psychoanalysis developed by Melanie Klein, have almost certainly been a partial object.

.The best song of 2007?
The Backyardigans theme tune.

.Which genre do you feel a part of?
meta-pop.

.Are you a perfect englishman?
why certainly, my dear. however, i am no by no means perfect by the standards of any other country, ours being apparently somewhat lower than most.

Say goodbye!
charmed, i'm sure. goodbye.
